On April 6, 2019, Linda Russell presented a keynote at the Minnesota Writing and English conference at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The title was “I Read it But…”  Linda and her colleague, Shirley Johnson, discussed the importance of background knowledge and context setting for enhancing reading comprehension as well as techniques for improving paraphrasing and summarizing. Additionally, the audience participated in several activities illustrating the novice/expert gap and aspects of disciplinary literacy that influence a reader’s ability to understand and work with subject specific texts.
